FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Three men charged in the 2001 gangland-style killing of businessman Konstantinos "Gus" Boulis have pleaded not guilty.
Anthony "Big Tony" Moscatiello, 67, Anthony "Little Tony" Ferrari, 48, and James "Pudgy" Fiorillo, 28, entered the pleas Monday.
The men were arrested in September for the Feb. 6, 2001 killing of Boulis, the Greek-born founder of the Miami Subs chain and the SunCruz Casinos gambling fleet.
A grand jury indicted them on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Moscatiello and Ferrari also are charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder, with prosecutors accusing them of attempting to solicit a fourth man in the plot.
All three are being held in the Broward County jail without bail.
Boulis, 51, was shot to death at the wheel of his car by an assailant who had pulled alongside. The shooting happened amid a bitter dispute over SunCruz, which Boulis had sold in September 2000 for $147.5 million to prominent Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff and New York businessman Adam Kidan.
Kidan and Abramoff have been indicted on charges they lied to get loans to purchase the business. Attorneys for Kidan and Abramoff have said their clients had nothing to do with Boulis' murder.
According to a murder indictment, Moscatiello and Ferrari tried to hire someone to kill Boulis. Fiorillo was not part of that deadly request, although he is charged with taking part in the murder conspiracy.
